We recently spent two days visiting area lakes and their public access areas both for fun and to scout for future paddle boarding. All of these lakes were beautiful but a few really stood out as being amazing places.
A few of the locations we visited include: Long Lake, Long Lake Dam, Loon Lake, Deer Lake, McDowell Lake, Bayley Lake, Starvation Lake, Black Lake, Twin Lakes, Gillette Lake, Lake Thomas, Lake Leo, Frater Lake, Nile Lake, and we drove past a few others simply because there are too many to visit in two days.
Aside from beautiful scenery, we also saw lily pads, both blooming and not, fish (of course) and people fishing in the mornings. Deer, birds, wild turkeys, and cattle were all near the lakes and roads leading to the lakes. Moose, elk, and bear had left their tracks for us to find without showing themselves…
These public access areas require maintenance of the roads, parking areas, toilets, boat ramps, trash cleanup (sadly), as well as wild fire fuel reduction and more. So,,, for many areas you will need a Discover Pass in your front window. Various fees can also be required and there are times when camp fires and even charcoal fires for cooking are not allowed. Some lakes have their own fishing regulations so do your homework before wetting a hook…
